The letter is scary.
The process is not.

IRS letters, back taxes, unfiled years, payroll tax. Every one of them follows written rules, and the rules include paths out. We start by reading what the IRS actually has on file for you. Then we build the plan from the record, not from fear.

First, what not to do

Do not ignore it. IRS problems have clocks attached, and almost every right you have comes with a deadline. The letter sitting unopened in a drawer is the only move that makes things strictly worse.

And do not assume the number on the notice is correct. IRS calculations are automated, and automated math misses things. We have seen the IRS's own recalculation leave out credits a client was legally owed. Every line deserves a read before anyone agrees to pay it.

How we work a case

  1. Start the intakeTell us what is going on. A letter, a balance, unfiled years, payroll tax. All of it is workable.
  2. Authorize the record pullYou sign an IRS authorization form so we can see your IRS account. This is how we learn what the IRS knows, what they missed, and what clocks are running.
  3. Get your Resolution RoadmapWe review every year on record and put your options in writing: where you stand, what the realistic paths are, what each one takes, and what it costs. You leave with the map whether or not we do the next phase together.
  4. Representation, if you want itIf the case calls for it, we quote the full representation in writing before any work begins. No surprise bills, no open meters.

What resolution can involve

Every case is different, which is why the Roadmap comes first. These are some of the tools the tax code provides, in plain words:

  • Penalty abatement. The IRS can remove certain penalties, including for a clean compliance history or for genuine hardship with reasonable cause.
  • Payment agreements. Structured monthly arrangements that stop the escalation while you pay what the record supports.
  • Currently Not Collectible status. When the numbers show you cannot pay, collection can be paused while life stabilizes.
  • Offer in Compromise. A settlement for less than the full balance, when your finances meet the IRS's own written standards. Real, but only for cases that qualify.
  • Payroll tax and trust fund defense. Business payroll debt is its own world, with personal exposure rules most owners have never been told about. We work these cases at every stage.
  • Unfiled returns. Getting compliant in the right order, because sequence matters more than most people know.

Full representation is quoted in writing after the Roadmap. As honest ranges: an Offer in Compromise engagement typically runs $8,500 to $9,000 all in, and payroll tax or trust fund cases typically run $10,000 to $15,000 depending on complexity. You will know your exact number before we begin.

From a $21,000 IRS bill to $3,200: Adrian's story

A missed W-2 turned into a growing $21,000 IRS liability and a bank lien warning. We rebuilt the return, caught a credit the IRS's own recalculation had missed, secured penalty abatement for reasonable cause, and answered every notice for three years until the final letter closed the case at $3,200, paid by refund offset. No check written.

"We messaged you, and you were there for us within five minutes or 30 seconds. You did it for three years."

Published with Adrian's express written authorization. Outcomes are case-specific and not a guarantee of similar results.

Common questions

Can you promise my debt gets reduced?

No, and be careful with anyone who does. What we promise is the work: a full read of your record, every option the rules allow, and representation that answers every notice. The "pennies on the dollar" pitch you hear in ads skips the part where those programs have strict written qualifications.

Is it too late? This has been going on for years.

Years-old problems are normal in this work. Most of our resolution clients waited longer than they wish they had. The record tells us exactly where things stand, including deadlines that may still be open and ones that clock in your favor.

What is an Enrolled Agent?

An Enrolled Agent is federally licensed by the U.S. Treasury to represent taxpayers before the IRS in all fifty states, at every level of the process. James also holds the Certified Tax Resolution Consultant designation, focused specifically on this work.

Will you work with my situation if it involves my business and payroll?

Yes. Payroll tax cases, including personal trust fund exposure, are a core part of our practice. These cases move on short deadlines, so the sooner the record is pulled, the more options stay open.
